After years of planning, we began our playground improvment project in March 2011. We wanted to provide a natural play space that was challenging, fun and interesting. We wanted to help children develop an affinity for nature so they could really experience the constantly changing dynamics of the world they live in. The preschoolers are never bored when they can freely run, chase, climb, take risks, balance, swing, pedal, dig, carry, pump, build, jump, fill, pour, reflect and watch. We use our playground everyday, for at least an hour, so the children have time to thoroughly explore, discover, construct, develop imaginative stories and practice their skills. The experience of being out in all kinds of weather is a valuable one for all of us. It makes us more resilient and builds healthier stronger bodies and minds. Although we have a vast supply of toys and equipment to share, the children still learn to take turns, negotiate and problem solve together. Together with the children, we plant vegetables, trees, bushes, bulbs, seeds and flowers. We care for these plants, delight in the changes and pick and eat the fruits and vegetables. We contribute our food scraps into our worm composter....which then provides great food for all our plants....who feed us and give us shade and places to hide. I hope you enjoy these snapshots of our experiences in our new playground.
