Hi everyone!
My name is Laurie Barker and this is my third year as teacher and manager of Bethel Preschool. Before moving here, my husband Andrew and I lived in Prince Rupert where we raised our three daughters Nikki, Alanna and Heidi. I enjoyed preschool teaching in Prince Rupert and one of my favourite activities was investigating tidal pools.
My Early Childhood training began at the University of Guelph in Ontario, where I received an ECE Degree. Robert Munsch was the head of our department and it was fun to hear him practice his stories, before they became books! Upon moving to BC, I took courses from Northwest Community College in Terrace, to re-certify as an Early Childhood and Special Needs Educator.
It was a privilege to be able to work with Sonya Mackill earlier this year. Recently my daughter Nikki joined the staff and we are having fun discovering and learning the preschoolers. Nikki was the teacher that donated our Stick Bugs to us.... many generations of stick bugs ago.
Hopefully my love bird Harvey will be able to make frequent visits to Bethel Preschool this year too!

Hello
My name is Nikki Barker. I started teaching at Bethel in February and am enjoying my time here. Working in a preschool with "older children" is a change, since I have spent the last few years working as an Infant and Toddler teacher in daycare settings. I completed my Early Childhood Education Certificate at Capilano College as well as my Infant/Toddler Certificate. I am continuing my education at Capilano University to finish my Special Needs Certificate.
I enjoy living on the Coast for part of the week. Living in Pender Harbour provides lots of opportunity to enjoy nature and the scenic drive to and from work. It was spectacular during the last storm to watch the harbour full of strong tall waves and the trees blowing in the mighty winds. On the weekends I head back to Coquitlam where I spend time with friends, volunteering at my church and doing odd jobs to help people out. I enjoy photography, cooking and baking, reading, crocheting, piano playing, and playing games with friends.
Working with multi-aged groups of children is always interesting because it provides new insights into different ways of looking at things and problem solving. Each child attempts things differently with different results and I love to watch the joys and struggles that show on their faces with the result that they obtain. Helping children to accomplish and learn new things is always exciting and keeps me looking for new ways to present ideas and materials that will spur the children on in their thinking and exploring. I look forward to the time we will all have together over the next few months.
